With Ulf’s ominous warnings about the difficulties of the coming journey through the Crown of the Earth, our intrepid adventurers take their time preparing. After purchasing a few items, we start to investigate the orphan disappearances in the Horn Quarter. We speak with effeminate Davis the Elf at St. Zechariah’s, old and kind Miss Mary next, and finally with profane dwarven brothers Oscar and Grouchy. It seems that the orphans were led out by a hypnotic voice that could speak perfect Varisian and Dwarven languages and the footsteps led toward the Bone Quarter.
Following the leads, we investigate the Bone Quarter, splitting up to gather leads. Our investigation of an inn, the Farmer’s Market, and some local children lead us to an unfruitful visit under a bridge with a paranoid and smelly man named Crazy Pete who refused to tell us much on the basis that he thought we were working with “the tentacle-faced man” and then onward to a mysterious shack that appeared overnight recently along the river. Walking inside the shack in spite of the nasty aura we perceive around it, we find three cloaked figures with long noses and their mysterious leader. He promises us information on the orphans if we are willing to rid him of a “pest” in his basement and bring him a glowing cube from inside a chest. As Skizzik is unable to enter with the Jade Seal, we depart briefly to drop it off with our caravan.
Upon our return, we venture into the dark basement and find ourselves in a tough fight with an alchemical monstrosity made of metal and tubes. The golem is vicious, throwing acid and fire around and damaging us as we attack it, but we eventually triumph. We claim some of the unique items within the chest we find afterward, but bring the mysterious figure from Lang the cube he requested. He admits to selling the orphans to Cultists of Cthulu camped in the woods and that he was told to kill us. We talk him out of it, and are allowed to head on our way.
Not wanting to deal with Brad the Wizard again for Rika’s sake, we instead pay our friend Heinrich the Druid and his companion Ziggy the Ram a visit outside of town. After we agree to compensate him, he uses his animal connections to trace the Cultist Camp and leads us there. Skizzik sneaks up on the camp, and the fight begins with Heinrich calling down lightning. Rika traps two cultists in a pit while the others duel the others. Jira finds the orphan children chained to the ground in one tent while Skizzik sets fire to the other. Our fight lasts long enough that the Cult Leader is able to summon mysterious creatures to aid against our onslaught.
When the battle seems to be nearing its conclusion, the Cult Leader decides to be a true douche bag and start stabbing the orphans to death. Rika and Jira race back to the tent to stop him, but it is Thom who ultimately brings him down by savagely charging him and impaling him on his lance. We lead the remaining traumatized orphans back to their orphanages in Kalsgard just in time to see a celebration in the city featuring lots of fireworks. That night, Rika experiences another dark vision, this time concerning our coming journey at the Crown of the Earth. We continue to stock up on necessary supplies, but we aren’t sure whether we will truly be prepared for the difficulties to come. It is under this cautious excitement and sense of foreboding that we conclude today’s session…
